People with disabilities

As a result of the severe living conditions for people in rural areas, the disability rate is particularly high in the areas of Andhra Pradesh where the Foundation works.

This, coupled with the fact that in a subsistence economy respect is given relative to the ability to contribute to the household economy, makes it necessary to give special attention to this situation through specific actions.

OUR PROJECTS

Orthopedic workshops

To increase mobility, orthopaedic and rehabilitation workshops have been organized for the manufacture of prosthetics, crutches and tricycles.

Specific medical treatment

The Foundation has a special traumatology program through which it provides medical care so that many people with disabilities can regain mobility. Traumatologists, orthopedic technicians and physiotherapists are working in this program.

Establishment of Special Centres

Education is the basis for integration, and is the gateway to a hopeful future.

The Foundation has so far opened 17 primary residential schools adapted for students with visual or hearing impairment, or intellectual disabilities. It has also launched two other secondary schools: the first, for children who suffer from visual impairment. The second, for students with hearing impairment.

With these centres a twofold aim is reached: to provide them with full academic training and prepare them so that in adult life they can be autonomous and independent.

Vocational training

In a rural setting like Anantapur and Kurnool, in Andhra Pradesh, the ability to contribute to the household economy is directly related to integration and social acceptance. Therefore, practical training in a trade is another of the Foundation’s fields of activity.

Group awareness

The Foundation has created in Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh), mutual support associations for people with disabilities, managed by the members themselves. They are called vikalangula shangams. These associations create strong uniting bonds and serve to help their members identify themselves as individuals, feel part of the community, enhance their skills and improve their capacity for action.

Thanks to a Common Fund, people with disabilities start up workshops, businesses and activities that allow them to achieve economic independence to some extent. The Common Fund thus contributes to their social integration.
